Planting on the moors

During the month of March, amongst the wind, rain and snow, our teams successfully completed a planting contract for Moors for the Future on Saddleworth Moor, near Holmfirth.

The works consisted of planting 45,355 Sphagnum Moss Plug plants over 35 hectares within a 4 week window.  The plants, which come wrapped in bunches of 20 were all individually planted over the site by hand.  The short window of opportunity, between the snow melting at the beginning of March and the nesting of the Short Eared Owl in the beginning of April, meant that every opportunity between the bad weather was seized to ensure the contract was completed on time.  As the plants need to be planted on the wettest areas of the moor, good footwear was essential and when visibility was poor good team work ensures nobody, got lost!

The contract was successfully completed, with all plants planted by the 1st April.
